Serves 4-6
This is one of my absolute favorites. It’s basically steak cooked in pizza sauce. My mom would slice up the steak once cooked, hollow out a mini loaf of her bread, and put the steak inside to make a sandwich. Of course, it was topped with Parmigiano cheese.
Ingredients
•Steak — 1 per person you are serving. Depending on size, adjust the number. Use thinly sliced sirloin steak gently pounded down. You can also use strip loin, beef tenderloin, flank, or round steak.
•Extra Virgin Olive Oil
•Garlic- Approximately four cloves
•Onion- One whole onion, any variety, will do.
•Oregano – (approximately 1 tablespoon)
•White Wine - optional
•Salt
•Tomatoes—One large can of San Marzano tomatoes, or you can also use a high-quality store-bought or home-preserved tomato passata.
Directions
•Gently pound the steaks until they are about 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick.
•Season the steak with salt and pepper.
•Add oil to your frying pan, and when hot, sear the steaks on both sides. Remove the steaks and set aside.
•Sauté the onions until browned and softened. Once they are done, add the garlic and stir until fragrant.
•Add approximately 1/4 cup white wine (this is optional but definitely adds to the flavor).
•Add tomatoes crushed by hand and oregano and cook for 15-20 minutes—season with salt to taste.
•Add the pan-fried steaks and juices to the tomato sauce and cook for about 15 minutes. Depending on your tastes, you can also cook it for longer.
Notes:
To use the extra sauce, you can serve a pasta side dish, or we like to serve this with the roasted rosemary potatoes.
